the wedding present…

Hello everyone!

I’ve completed the second cushion of the set for the wedding present for my co-worker.

Here’s the second cushion using the same colours as in the first cushion – chocolate brown and cream.  I created the “heathered” look by knitting with the 2 coloured strands at the same time.

For this cushion cover I used just your basic garter stitch (knitting every row).  I used US size 9 needles and casted on 60 stitches of a DK weight yarn.  I knit with the two colours of yarn at the same time and continued until the piece measured 30″ in length.  The finished cushion is 16″X16″.

Here are the two cushions together.

Well off to find a box to put them in so I can wrap them up and bring them to work with me tomorrow!

Happy knitting!

mr. + mrs.

Hi there!

In my last post I mentioned I wanted to make a little wedding gift for one of the girls at work who is getting married at the end of April.

Since I’ve been on a bit of a cushion craze, I thought I would make her a set of cushions.

Here’s the first one in the set.

I plan on making a second cushion to compliment this one by using the same two colours – cream and dark brown.  I’m going to mix the two colours together to create a “heathered” look.

I’ll share photos of the set when I’m all done!

Happy knitting!

I’m finished…

Hey there!

I finished my mock cable cushion cover!

It ended up a bit shorter than my other cushion covers I knitted, but once the cushion was put in and I sewed it up, it looked just fine.

I used 2 balls (320 yards each) of DK yarn.  I double knit using 2 strands of yarn at one time and used US size 9 single pointed needles. I casted on 62 stitches and followed the mock cable pattern until I came pretty much to the end of my yarn.

The yarn that I used (and use for just about every project I make!) is Stylecraft Special DK and I purchase it on line at loveknitting.com.

The mock cable pattern was written out in an earlier post.  You can click here to find it!

I was going to start my second matching cushion cover today, but I just found out one of my co-workers is getting married at the end of April and I want to make her a little something.  I will share it once it’s finished!

Happy knitting!

Almost finished…

Wow! It’s been awhile since I posted anything!

We’ve had a couple of birthdays around here so had some busy weekends and also I’ve started working more.  I work as a part-time administrator at a local greenhouse so of course, in the Spring, we are the busiest!

But, I’ve managed to get in some knitting and am still working away on the cushion cover for my bed. I’m almost finished!  My balls of yarn are near the end and it doesn’t look like I will come even close to the 30″ in length I made my other cushion covers.  I’m only going to finish the balls and then see how it turns out.  There’s a lot of stretch in this pattern so it should be o-kay…I hope! LOL!!

Well, I’m off to bring my son to guitar and I’m hoping after supper I’ll have time to finish the cushion cover!!

Happy knitting!

A new stitch pattern…

Hi there!

It’s really snowing and blowing here today so it’s a great day to knit! Well, really every day is a great day to knit, LOL, but more so when the weather is yucky!!

In my last post, I mentioned I wanted to knit some new cushion covers for the throw cushions in my bedroom and wanted something that had a lot of texture.  So, I pulled out my knitting books and found this super easy mock cable stitch!!

DSCN2715

For this stitch pattern, I needed to learn a couple of things I didn’t know – “yo” (yarn over needle) and “psso” (pass slipped stitch over).  You may have already come across these techniques in other knitting patterns, but I never had.  So, I googled them and found some really good YouTube videos that showed me how to do them.

I really like this stitch pattern, so below I have written it out so you can try it too!

Mock Cable

Cast on a multiple of 4 plus 2.

Row 1 (WS): K2, *p2, k2, rep from * across row
Row 2: P2, *k1, yo, k1, p2, rep from * across row
Row 3: K2, *p3, k2, rep from * across row
Row 4: P2, *sl 1, k2, psso both k sts, p2, rep from * across row

Repeat rows 1-4 for pattern.

Happy knitting!

They’re finished!!!

Hi there!

I’ve completed the third and final cushion for my living room couch and I wanted to share it with you! I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

DSCN2608

I used the stockinette stitch (knit the knitted side and purl the purl side) and knitted a piece that was approximately 20″ X 25″ and then folded it in half to create the cover.  The cushion insert was 20″ X 13″.  This cover was double knit using 2 strands of DK yarn at one time and I used size 9 US needles.  I casted on 72 stitches to get the width I needed.  To sew up the seams, I used the mattress stitch.DSCN2605

To figure out when to switch my yarn colour for my word, I took a piece of graph paper and filled in squares to spell “home”.  I randomly picked where to start my word on the cover, but knew I wanted it on the bottom right hand corner.  I started the word on the purl side of the cover and following the pattern I created, whenever I came to where the word had to be, I switched out the white yarn for the black.

DSCN2611

I really hope you can understand what I have written above on how to incorporate a word into your knitting.  It’s difficult to explain in writing exactly what I did.  Maybe one day I’ll venture into the world of videos and create something you can watch to explain the process better. 😉

Here’s a photo of all three of my cushions.

DSCN2610

Well, I’m off now to knit a hat and an infinity scarf – a request from a friend!  I’ll make sure to share it when I’m done!!

Happy knitting!

2 of 3…

Hi everyone!

I’ve completed cushion 2 of 3 I wanted to do.

DSCN2568

I used the garter stitch for this cushion and 3 different colours to create this affect. I knit using 2 strands of DK yarn at one time.

The grey is the main colour. I mixed black with the grey for the bottom section and then white with grey for the top.

I cast on 60 stitches using size 9 US needles and knit a 5″ black/grey section, then a 20″ white/grey section and finished with another 5″ black/grey section for a total of a 30″ piece.  When you fold the piece in half, the sections will meet up making both sides the same.

This piece will cover a 16″ X 16″ cushion.

You can click here for the pattern.

Here are the two cushions I’ve done so far.

And here’s a sneak peek of the 3rd cushion!!

DSCN2588

I can’t wait to share this one with you!!

I hope everyone has a super weekend.

Happy knitting!

And I’m done…

Hi everyone!

I’m done! I’ve finished my first cushion cover!

DSCN2527

I’m just thrilled with how it turned out! And I was even able to match up the pattern on the seams!

DSCN2525

If you want to make one of your own, you can click here to see the pattern.

I’ve decided to make more cushion covers for the cushions on my couch, but in different stitches for variety (I’ve already started the second one!) so I will post those when I’m done too.

But right now I’ve off to sew up my husband’s socks.  I also finished those yesterday and he mentioned he would like them for the weekend!

Happy knitting!

practice, practice, practice…

Hi there!

I’m so thrilled!

In my last post, I mentioned when I’m making socks, I have a bit of a hard time increasing my stitches and I always end up with holes or gaps.

Well, not this time!! By the time I got to the toes on these socks, I increased my stitches WITHOUT any holes!! Woo hoo! DSCN2504I guess it just takes a lot of practice! 😀

Well, I’m off to finish up the socks and work a bit on some cushion covers I’m making for the cushions on my couch. Yes, I started ANOTHER project!!  With my hat finished that I started last week, I only had 2 projects on the go and since 3 in my favourite number…   😉

Happy knitting.
